Is the United States a Christian Nation?

by Noel Burton, BNS Supporter

Is the United States a Christian Nation?  While much has been made about our own Presidents comments to the contrary, the bigger question would have to be have Christians lost their influence? Sadly we would have to say yes. In my own lifetime prayer has been removed from school, abortion has been legalized,  same sex marriages promoted and the moral fiber of the nation has eroded to new lows. As a young boy I can remember stores closed on Sundays, school and businesses closed for Good Friday, and even a local network TV station that started and finished its broadcasting days with “Blessed is the Nation who God is the Lord – Psalms 33:12”.

Unfortunately Christians have allowed political correctness, liberalism and general indifference to push us to the back seat. While our nation may not have been established as a Christian nation, no one can argue that it was not influenced by Christian principles and ideas. The very basis of law stems from the Ten Commandments and many of our prestigious universities were established as religious institutions. Even outsiders recognized religion’s effect on the nation. The French Historian/Philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville while visiting the United States in the earlier 1800′s has been attributed to saying “American is great because she is good. If America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great”.

Is it just coincidence that our nation’s prosperity sinks lower and lower as does our moral compass? I think not. This is why more than even the Bible needs to be an influence in our society. God’s word gives us the blueprint to living a successful life. Honoring our parents, recognizing  the sanctity of life, obeying leadership, giving our best – how can these things not be relevant in today’s world? With so much information at our fingertips, we have lost the connection to the most important source of information – the Bible. I recently saw a church sign that summarized it best, “get off of Facebook and get into the Faithbook!”.  Support Bible Nation Society and its mission to return the Bible to its rightful place in our nation.

    We are a secular nation. You make it sound like people must adhere to your interpretation of religion to live a respectful prosperous life.

  2. Fr. Israfel says:

    Do what thou Wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

    How is America a Christian nation when some of the most prominent founding fathers were Deist? HA!

    They founded this country to be devoid of a national religion. To say that our laws are based solely on the Ten Commandments is false. In most societies, theft and murder are looked down upon. Many religions look at these two crimes as to be evil. There’s two commandments. That’s it. Is adultery illegal? Is saying IHVH in vain illegal? NO!

    A lot of Christians look at the Pledge of Allegiance and “In God We Trust” as advocacy of a Christian USA. Christianity is not the sole owner of the term God. God is a generic term to explain the divine. Most Christians could not properly identify different terms for their Abrahamic god ie. El Shaddai, Elohim, Adonai, etc.

    Love is the Law, Love under Will.

    America a christian nation ? That would mean a country which citizens leave by the precepts of Christ… But what is seen from the outside ? A country who electeted and re-elected a President who lied to his people, who cheated about so called weapons of mass-destruction to put his hand on a country and its oil at the cost of innocent lives… a country who let millions of his own people without any mean to treat themselves in case of serious illness (no solidarity…), in the church we see greedy leaders with yatchs, private planes, who travel in first class, wearing costly watches and jewels, we see so-called christians who are ‘pro-life’, ie beeing against abortion But Pro death-penalty… America a christian nation??? But where is the spirit of Christ in this nation ??? Beeing puritans does not mean having the mind of Christ… I do not think that Jesus was a puritan according to the meaning of this word today. (Sorry for my english… I am from the country of Alexis de Tocqueville…).

    You said it! We also should always support Israel. So many people are shrinking back from supporting Israel, even bashing her, so many so called Christians. It’s sad and it will be Americas undoing.

    The website attached is a significant rebuttal

    Also, the ten commandments are not the source for our laws. The very fist one is allowed to be violated by the Constitution, I can worship as many gods as I please.

    My grandparents were Christians in Northern Ireland. She was Protestant, and he was Catholic. They had to flee after death threats. When I became of age, I volunteered and joined the Army, and I served as an 11B Infantryman. Most of my time in the field was in squad or platoon size operations. We would have discussions about what we were fighting for. It always came back to the “Bill of Rights”. To me the most important was “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…”
    What did our Founding Fathers have to say about religion:
    “Question with boldness even the existence of a god.” – Thomas Jefferson (letter to Peter Carr, 10 August 1787):
    “All natural institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian, or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit.” Thomas Paine, The Age of Reason;
    “Religion and government will both exist in greater purity, the less they are mixed together.”, John Madison;
    “Lighthouses are more helpful than Churches”, Benjamin Franklin

    Thank, no, PRAISE THE LORD that we still have orginazations like this that still promote the Bible today!!! You are a blessing to me!!! Thank you! :)

    To whom it may concern
    It was an unexpected treasure find when the Expo 2011 came to Washington DC.
    Was that the last one? Where can more copies of The 1611 King James Bible be purchased?
